Okta
THE CHALLENGE
Back in 2024, Okta had very minimal design presence in India just one Staff Designer despite significant engineering and product operations in Bangalore. The company was looking for someone who could build an entire design & research organization from scratch while maintaining global design standards and seamless collaboration across time zones. I joined as the second design hire in India with a Director-level mandate to establish the vision, build the team ground up, create an operating model, and integrate with global design leadership. At that point, all of Okta's Workforce Identity was undergoing a major strategic shift.
WHAT I DID
Built Okta's first India-based design organization from zero. Set strategic direction, created operating models, and established design as a critical function while reporting to the head of design. Balanced local hiring needs with global standards and built relationships across multiple geographies. Scaled the team from 1 to 11 designers across Product Designer, Senior, and Staff levels. Established hiring frameworks, interview processes, onboarding programs, and career development systems. Each hire had to meet global Okta standards while building local capability. Set strategic direction for Workforce Identity platform in collaboration with Product and Engineering across US, India, and EMEA. Defined vision, operating model, and design principles. Facilitated external events with 150+ global attendees, building shared design language and community. Operating as Acting Director taught me what leadership at scale requires. But the hardest lesson was recognising when to hire someone more senior than me. Ego wants to hold the title. Maturity wants to build something sustainable. Hiring my own boss and successfully transitioning to a Manager taught me that impact matters infinitely more than title!
